Focus Groups

We frequently run focus groups to learn from members of our community and to improve our understanding of how we can best support the community and address health inequalities. We work closely with researchers to ensure people from a wide variety of backgrounds can be involved and share their views. Below is a snapshot of some recent focus groups to give you a flavour of what we do. For more information or to find out how we might be able to support your research in this area please email info@safh.org.uk.

  • We ran discussion groups for people who are of Pakistani heritage to share their thoughts on genetic research which would look at how marrying a close relative or someone from the same biraderi or community group may affect the chance of having a child with a rare genetic disorder.

Contributions will help shape future research and how this is communicated.

  • An exploratory session to provide a first step in understanding the views of Muslim populations in Newham on addiction in their communities.

This is to form part of Outside Edge’s ongoing work to develop drama groups and resources for communities in Newham affected by addiction.

  • We ran seven focus groups to understand what people from Tower Hamlets thought and felt about the efforts made to manage COVID-19. Discussions also explored trust and COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

We spoke with people from Bangladeshi, Somali, and White British backgrounds, young people, people who are disabled, and to a group of care home workers who had chosen not to receive the vaccine at the time of discussions (May 2021).
