'The Mother's House' proposal is longlisted for The Davidson Prize

We were delighted to share our expertise and insights from supporting homeless mothers in the local community and help shape an innovative proposal to rejuvenate a vacant building in Bethnal Green into “The Mother’s House”. Excitingly, the proposal has been longlisted for The Davidson Prize!

The Mother’s House aims to create fundamental change for homeless single mothers. It will provide a secure home from which mothers can make decisions about the future, with private and shared spaces designed for family living and to encourage informal support networks.

In England, there are 40,000 single mothers living in temporary accommodation. Single mothers make up 6% of households, but nearly 40% of homeless households. Homeless families are often moved into single rooms with no kitchen, nowhere to wash clothes, nowhere for children to play, and sometimes in a room so small, there is no space for the baby’s crib. Isolated and struggling, homeless mothers are more likely than any other group to be trapped in long-term poverty.

Together, with Balaam Murphy, Platform Homes Self-Build, Single Parents Rights, Lucie Stroud and Circlus, we are proposing a women-led housing association to support single mothers and children.

If shortlisted, our project will be awarded £5,000 to develop our design and ideas and we will be in the running to receive the £10,000 prize to bring The Mother’s House to life!
